Prayer Request from Primate

My fellow Anglicans:

I ask you to join me in prayer today for the people of Chile and two of its principal cities-Conception and Santiago-where a devastating earthquake struck early Saturday morning. There is surely loss of life, though we don't yet have details on that, and, as with the disaster in Haiti only six weeks ago, there is no doubt that a great many people will be homeless and have their lives disrupted.

Events at this time are still unfolding as the damage caused by the very strong earthquake and its aftershocks is compounded by the threat of a tsunami that, we are told, could potentially affect all nations with Pacific shorelines,

I ask you to include this request in your prayers at your Sunday Eucharist and in the coming days.

To date, PWRDF has sent $100,000 in response to the Haiti Emergency. $50,000 to ACT and $50,000 to Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) for the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti. Procurement of food and medicine will be done in-country with support from the Diocese of the Dominican Republic.  ERD is helping coordinate this effort. PWRDF’s initial emergency grant of $50,000 will help the Diocese of Haiti to provide food and medical care to about 20,000 people in the Leogane region. PWRDF is in contact with Canadian Anglican Priest Ogé Beauvoir who is assisting the Diocese of Haiti with emergency response and a needs assessment around long term permanent housing.

PWRDF responds to massive destruction in Haiti

Clean water flows in Haiti

Canadian Anglicans are supporting earthquake response by Action by Churches Together (ACT) International through The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund PWRDF). PWRDF is eligible for CIDA matching funds collected between January 12 and February 12, 2010.
Food and water have started moving in Haiti as aid workers struggle to distribute goods and relief materials. The ACT Alliance has set up tented camps in a soccer stadium in the Santa Teresa area of Petionville, offering shelter for the homeless population. ACT has delivered a 10,000 litre water bladder to a makeshift tent city at a partially-destroyed school in the Pean district of Port-au-Prince. A portable water system for the homeless families has also been set up and operates alongside an existing rainwater harvesting system.

A statement from the Primate on the disaster in Haiti

Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Anglican Church of Canada
January 13, 2010 -

Haiti has been devastated by a terrible earthquake. Thousands are feared to have died and many more injured. The people in Haiti have suffered so much in the past 10 years. Hurricane Jeanne ripped through the island in 2004 and in 2008 tropical storms took a huge toll. Now a new disaster. Through the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund, our church has made an initial donation of $15,000 for emergency relief through Action by Churches Together (ACT).

The Anglican Church of Canada and especially the Diocese of Montreal has had a long relationship with the Anglican Church of Haiti, personalized in many respects by Canon Ogé Beauvoir, the dean of the theological seminary in Haiti. A graduate of Montreal Diocesan College, he went to Haiti in 1991 as a Volunteer in Mission. In 1996, he returned to Canada to serve as regional mission coordinator for Africa and the Middle East. He returned to Haiti, where he was born, in 2004. We are grateful to know that he and his wife Serette are safe.

Please pray for the people of Haiti as they struggle with such devastation and grief..

Please remember as well their relatives in Canada and the Canadian Haitian community many of whom anxiously await news of friends, relatives and loved ones.

Please give generously to increase our support for relief efforts.

I make this appeal in the name of Christ in his compassion for all who suffer.

+Fred
